Hence his very short tenure as NSA director. The FBI routinely monitors Russians and especially the ambassador and Flynn made it easy to eavesdrop (as did Trump) by not using a secure phone. The Patriot Act makes it perfectly legal to spy on Americans who may be engaged in activities contrary to the best interests of the country. Manafort and Flynn did it routinely to make money. Ironically Flynn is barely mentioned in the book.

This is the best book of the 100 or so I've read this year. It's a well-articulated history of the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Reading this is like being given a summary of Rachel Maddow shows for the last three years.

My critical takeaway: Trump is so mobbed up that it's frightening and a national security risk. He and Putin want to remake the world order so that they are the two major geopolitical powers, Putin has restored the territory of the old Soviet Union, and Trump wants to become the dictator of the states for life, presumably.

The House is just now getting into the substantial degree that Republicans have been handmaidens to the Russian mob, which consists largely of oligarchs that have taken over various companies/regions of the old Soviet empire. The chief architects of this in the United States are, besides the president, Mitch McConnell (known thug Oleg Deripaska funded Kentucky's giant new aluminum plant); Devin Nunes, who was elected from a heavily agricultural district in California as a farmer but has since sold all his family's farms and bought two vineyards for which he now pushes favorable legislation; Michael Cohen, now in prison, who created his entire business through mob connections and has since turned on Trump; former Secretary of Defense Michael Flynn, who was the most heavily mobbed up U.S. official and is now awaiting a long prison sentence; Paul Manafort, greatly intrusive in Ukraine and tight with Russia (now in prison); and lesser characters including Roger Stone, Maria Butina, Carter Page, and a cast of dozens.

The authors of this book are the cofounders of Fusion, a political research agency with no predispositions for either major party. They commissioned Christopher Steele of Orbis, a roughly equivalent UK organization, to do a major investigation into the 2016 election. The consequent "Steele Dossier" was maligned and ridiculed by Republicans as propaganda, especially over such sensational trivialities as the "Pee Tape," which showed Trump in a Moscow hotel encouraging two prostitutes to give a "golden shower" onto the bed in which the Obamas had once slept. It turns out that, although this book doesn't give significant explication of the incident, Steele claimed that he had seven eyewitnesses to the alleged incident.

The vehemence with which the Republicans maligned the "Steele Dossier" was possibly proportionate to the degree of truth it conveyed. This book carefully examines the entire dossier to see what upset the Republicans so. The answers are riveting and premonitory.

The best quote in the book is the last paragraph of the book before the Epilogue: "That Trump had not, in fact, been exonerated. That Trump had lied repeatedly. That he had sought the aid of Wikileaks to damage the Clinton campaign. That it was not a 'witch hunt.'" That the Russians had very blatantly interfered in the election."

The best summary quote from the Epilogue: "As the Republican Party's base of white voters has shriveled, there has been an increased willingness on the part of its leaders to pursue win-at-all-costs electoral strategies, such as the deliberate disenfranchisement of minorities and covert alliances with foreign regimes similarly fearful of demographic demise."

This book is a critical and frightening warning to Americans that if Trump is not impeached and removed before the 2020 presidential election, the entire American experiment may be over and the U.S. Constitution will become a historical artifact.

Besides being mandatory reading, this book reads like a spy novel and is hard to put down. I couldn't recommend it more highly to anyone who cares about the future of the United States.

This is, unquestionably, the best explanation I've read on why the United States is in its current situation vis à vis Donald J. Trump & the Russian Federation (Russia). It gives a panoramic view in detailed (though not exhaustive) narrative of the intersection of the two countries & Trump & his cronies, including the GOP Republican Party, from roughtly 2015 (& a little before) down to 2019. This narrative is based mainly on the work of their company, Fusion GPS, of which the authors are co-founders; and through one of their collaborators in the UK, Christopher Steele, chronicler of what is now known as the "Steele Dossier".

The book sets the record straight, as best as the authors are humanly able, so it is authoritative. There is admirable care taken not to cross boundaries of confidentiality of clients of Fusion GPS, but the authors stretch as far as they legally can to present true facts. The sum total of their work, along with that of others, belies & negates the untruthful, fanciful, twisted & sometimes ridiculous version of Trump's supporters. Although Simpson & Fritsch were experienced journalists before they founded Fusion GPS, the authors' purpose was to contract with carefully vetted clients to produce research reports on information, primarily public records, needed by clients. They were not opposition or intelligence reporters. They favored no one party over another. When news started breaking about Trump's transgressions with the Russians, most people, including the media, misunderstood this. Had the news media gotten it right from the start, their investigations would've led them to expose Trump & his dealing with Russia much earliert.

In the end, most of what the authors had learned in their early research came to be verified, sometimes much later, as true & factual. Shamefully, in the meantime, they went through of time of ridicule & harassment from Republican members of Congress & right-wing conservatives, many of whom ended up in the "hot seat" themselves later on!

The book emphasizes the extreme ongoing danger of Russia's meddling in our democracy up to the present day. The authors end the book this way:

"The Trump campaign's conspiring with Russia may not be a crime provable in federal court, but it amounts to one of the most significant betrayals in American history.
That, at its core, was the warning sounded by Fusion and Steele in 2016, a warning that remains as urgent today as it was then."

Simpson does a good job of laying out the chronology in more linear fashion than we have seen in the past, which is important because most of the conspiracy theories involving Fusion GPS have gotten it all wrong, which I suppose is part of their charm. In short, its clear that Trump has lied numerous times about his personal ties to Russian money, if not Russian hackers, and that nothing he says on the subject has any probative value whatsoever.

So where does that leave us? Well, we know that Steele, the former MI6 agent who created the "dossier" was a well-regarded agent by both the Brits and the FBI/CIA here, and an expert Russianologist. We also know that most, if not all, of his report has been substantively verified, or not yet verified. Neither the "pee tape" nor the story of Michael Cohen in Prague have yet been verified, but there have been interesting pieces of info around both that are difficult to dismiss.

But more to the point, we've seen Trump repeatedly coddle Putin, including at Helsinki, where he stood up and said he didn't "believe" his own intelligence community in front of Putin, as well as pressing for removing sanctions and other results of his bad behavior in Crimea and elsewhere. We know he's lied about his business interests in Russia, as well as his numerous dubious Russian buyers here. And we know he pressured Ukraine to hold a presser to smear Biden with unfounded allegations.

In short, the evidence is right in front of us, regardless of whether you believe Fusion GPS or not. The only question is whether you care. And if you don't, then perhaps democracy is not for you.

It's no wonder that conspiratorialists and Trump supporters (a redundancy?) have set out to trash this book. It provides a thorough examination of the process and results of investigations over several years by Fusion GPS.

Malcolm Nance, author of The Plot to Betray America, is an intelligence and foreign policy analyst. In a recent interview he described how Putin made millions after the fall of the Soviet Union by aligning himself with those who were selling off state property. He had been a ranking official in the KGB that became the FSB, the new Russian spy service and from there moved into the dictatorship role. Spies are good at getting the goods on people and using that information to their own ends. They look for those who love money and have large egos because they will do anything for money and flatter themselves it's for the best. Guess who fit that bill to a Tee. They soon had all sorts of goods on him.

The Steele Dossier had the details. Fusion GPS was a small research company that specialized in getting the goods on intricate financial transactions. It was founded by Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, two former Wall Street Journal reporters. They had done no political work, but mainstream GOP, worried about the Trump candidacy in 2016, hired them to research into Trump's background. Fusion had begun its own research into Trump at the behest of a Republican client. It found damning open-source evidence: court documents, corporate bankruptcies and ties to organized crime. It turned to Christopher Steele to get intelligence from inside Russia. Many strands pointed there. What Steele might find was uncertain. "We threw a line in the water and Moby-Dick came back," Simpson writes dryly. Steele, who had worked for MI6, soon to become a household word for the "Dossier" with its salacious details.

Among those they hired was Warren Barrett who had written a detailed book about Trump's early financial dealings.* Their funding originally came from a conservative billionaire. As Trump became more and more acceptable to the GOP, Simpson and Fritsch peddled their research to the Democrats. Almost all of their research was done by examining public documents, especially court cases, depositions, and filings. As Trump gained momentum, the billionaire's support waned and even though Simpson and Fritsch rather despised the Clintons for their ostensible soliciting of funds from countries where Hillary was in a position to make a difference, they agreed to turn over what they had on Trump to the Democrats and continue to do more research, when asked.

The contents of the famous dossier have been related elsewhere and far be it from me to go into the prostitute urinating scene. What is much more interesting is the revelation that the Russians had prevented Trump from appointing Mitt Romney as Secretary of State. That implies a shocking level of foreign influence over Trump, or, that someone is not acting on the level. Steele argued that the Russians never would have revealed the urinating incident because they wanted Clinton to be defeated and therefore would try to suppress negative information about Trump. All they needed was the threat of revelation.

There does seem to be plenty of "evidence" leading one to speculate just how much influence the Trump campaign was seeking from the Russians. Carter Page's Trump that put him on the FBI's radar has never been explained. Surprisingly, Simpson and Fritsch never trusted Steele and never wanted his allegations to be revealed, but they did feel they were important enough to turn over to the authorities. The authors insist they were not the ones who went to the FBI with the dossier; it was Steele himself.

Paul Manafort and his lobbying firm, of which Roger Stone was a partner, had been the subject of attention for several years before Trump sought high office. They specialized in polishing the reputations of dictators, mobsters (particularly Russians who had piles of cash) and strong men.

The research began with a survey of all the legal databases for lawsuits that to which Trump was a party. It was a rich vein, indeed. Most businessmen get sued or sue at one time or another, but Trump brought them to a new level. Rather than a one-page list, his went on for dozens of pages and a pattern soon emerged that showed him involved in hundreds of schemes to bilk investors, suppliers, and customers. Fusion's research process was simplicity itself. They hired researchers to scour public databases for information. What they uncovered about Trump was rampant hypocrisy (he hired hundreds of undocumented workers), numerous bankruptcies and illegal actions, not to mention several mob connections. All of this was made available to anyway interested (and willing to pay).

Paul Manafort and General Flynn had been involved with the Russians and Turks. The Russians had been seeking to annex Ukraine, a worrisome prospect for western European countries who got much of their natural gas from a pipeline traveling through Ukraine. Manafort was indicted under 12 counts of violating FARA, the Foreign Agents Registration Act, a 1938 law intended to prevent Nazi disinformation campaigns in the United States. (Flynn had retroactively registered when it became obvious that he was lobbying for Turkey. Late registrations are common. He resigned following revelations that he and the administration had lied about the conversations he had had with the Russian ambassador. The fact that he was a registered foreign agent also made him subject to FISA investigations. See the Lawfare article cited below for a more detailed explanation.*) Flynn had had conversations and made promises to the Russians before he was appointed as National Security Advisor (that has to be one of the worst nominations ever) and then lied about those conversations not to the FBI but also his boss. The FBI had tapes of Russians discussing how they could best manipulate Manafort and Flynn who seem to have been motivated mostly by money.

The book has many critics who cherry pick assorted charges and speculations. Representative Nunes, of the House Intelligence Committee, flew to Britain to discuss Steele with MI6 and MI5. They refused to meet with him. It was amateur hour at its worst. But the book is not about Steele or the dossier. It's an examination of Fusion GPS, how it worked, and the process it used to collect information for its clients and the failure of the American media to followup on a story that was handed to them.

The book is also a story without an end. A really important book for anyone who wants to know the real story behind the headlines.

The now-declassified FBI annex says, referring to Steele: "The most politically sensitive claims by the FBI source alleged a close relationship between the President-elect and the Kremlin. The source claimed that the President-elect and his top campaign advisers knowingly worked with Russian officials to bolster his chances of beating Secretary Clinton; were fully knowledgeable of Russia's direction of leaked Democratic emails; and were offered financial compensation from Moscow."
Later, the annex elaborates: "The FBI source claimed that secret meetings between the Kremlin and the President-elect's team were handled by some of the President-elect's advisers, at least one of whom was allegedly offered financial remuneration for a policy change lifting sanctions on Russia."

What started as an investigation of Trump's tangled business dealings became ever more intertwined in previous investigations into Russian corruption, as they realized that investigating Trump meant investigating his Russian associations and business dealings.

It's a fascinating and complicated tale, and it's told very well. It does require attention and patience to absorb the entire complicated story, including the coincidences, conflicts, and the stresses on the Fusion GPS partners, after the Steele dossier is leaked and Fusion GPS becomes the focus of Republican determination to protect Trump. It's detailed, compelling, well written, and then very well read by Mark Deakins. It's essential reading or listening if you want to follow what's going on with the impeachment inquiry, and why it isn't just another political fight.

Highly recommended.

I mentioned to a Goodreads friend that I was reading this, he an ardent consumer of the right wing Kool-Aid, and he said he would probably not read it since he has checked it out on web and it is all made up fabrications and lies. Well, take a look anyway and see how the sausage of politics is made. See the machinations the right has gone through to attempt to discredit the work. See how the fun folks on capital hill transmit "closed door, non-public, confidential information" from a Senate hearing so that it can be leaked by the House and become the subject of various subpoenas. Find out why, after winning a court battle to obtain the Fusion customer list, the information was never released. (Hint: the original research that Fusion performed was done on behalf of a Republican organization trying to stop Trump's nomination.) Watch how the supposed lies lead to one indictment and conviction after another.

So, check some information, from the horses's mouth as it were, in a book that is well written and delivered by experienced journalists. Make up your own mind as to the veracity of the claims Maybe my bias leads to the 5 star rating (like all those 5 star ratings for right wing books that the republican PACs buy up to make it appear they have a best seller), but I have read many political works, both right and left wing, that are nowhere near the quality of this one. In May of 2016 they hired Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence office, to answer questions about the nature of Trump's relationship with Russia and Putin. Simpson and Frit The authors Simpson and Fritsch are two former Wall Street Journal reporters who own the Washington-based research firm Fusion GPS. In May of 2016 they hired Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence office, to answer questions about the nature of Trump's relationship with Russia and Putin. The contents of Steele's memoranda, and the fact that Obama and Trump were briefed about them, was leaked to the press in early January 2017 which was shortly before the inauguration. Simpson and Fritsch then realized that, by briefing the president, the intelligence community thought the research was credible.

The possible consequences of Trump's unchecked friendliness toward Putin included the lifting of sanctions on Russia, the weakening or even demise of NATO, the spread of Russian-style corruption and kleptocracy to the West, and, more immediately for Fusion, the threat of retaliation from an incoming regime eager to even the score against its critics and whistleblowers.

Fusion GPS was originally hired by Trump's Republican primary opponents in late 2015. Initially Trump was not being investigated for his Russian ties but rather for hypocrisies and lies surrounding his businesses, his wealth (or lack thereof), and his positions on issues. For example, although Trump has backed a xenophobic view on immigration, he has often employed illegal immigrant labor in his businesses and recruited immigrants from abroad.

Trump Organization had sponsored at least 1,494 foreign worker visas since 2000. His Palm Beach estate and private club, Mar-a-Lago, was the largest of his properties to import immigrant labor, with at least 872 visas to its name.

One of the most interesting elements of this book involves reporting on Trump's connections to organized crime that hasn't gotten much attention, e.g. his connection to Felix Sater, a Russian-born crime figure who had a business card stating he was a "senior advisor to Donald J. Trump."

During the entire span of his career, Donald Trump has done business with at least 25 individuals and companies with documented mob ties, including various powerful Italian and Russian syndicates.

Fusion GPS did not approach the Democrats with their research until March of 2016, when it appeared that Trump had secured the Republican nomination. At this point Fusion offered its research to a DNC-connected law firm who agreed to contract its services. Fusion then contracted with Steele independently for an investigation into Trump's Russia connections. Steele was so alarmed by what he had found that he asked for, and was given permission by Fusion, to give his findings to the FBI. Through the next several months, Fusion gave background briefings to news organizations about its research but did not give any of them a copy of the dossier. After the election, Steele gave a copy of the dossier memos to the UK intelligence chief and MI5 arranged for him to also give a copy to Senator John McCain via his aide David Kramer. Despite his promise to give the dossier only to Senator McCain, Kramer later leaked the dossier to the press and it emerged into the public sphere.

"The allegations were disturbing, but I had no idea which if any were true," McCain later wrote. "I could not independently verify any of it, and so I did what any American who cares about our nation's security should have done. I put the dossier in my office safe, called the office of the director of the FBI, Jim Comey, and asked for a meeting." McCain's friend and colleague Lindsey Graham later admitted that he had encouraged McCain to turn the dossier over to the FBI. Months later Graham would feign outrage over the dossier during congressional hearings.

This is a well-written, informative, and fascinating account of Fusion's research into Trump's character and background. There are a lot of details about the investigation that make much more sense when put into context as this book does. The Steele dossier will probably go down in history for its significance in the Trump-Russia investigation. One other important takeaway is that the press failed to properly report the Trump-Russia story before the 2016 election despite having it dropped in their laps. As a result, Putin was allowed to put his puppet in the White House.

To deny that Russia intervened in the 2016 election with the express purpose of helping Trump win—given all the evidence presented by Mueller and the Intelligence Community—requires a staggering degree of willful blindness. Worse, however, is to support that position with silence.

There have been many books written about the Trump-Russia connection and this is one of the better ones. The writing is clean and straightforward resulting in a tight professional narrative. You won't be wasting your time reading this. Highly recommended.

This is the firsthand account of the two co-founders of Fusion GPS, who worked as seasoned journalists before faring into private investigations and who commissioned Christopher Steele of MI6 and Orbis to independently ratify their own discoveries about Trump's connections to organized crime and worrisome connections with Russia. Christopher Steele expanded the intelligence pool on Trump's profile exponentially when he consulted his own diplomatic sources-- most of whom were placed into grave jeopardy when his intelligence dossier was exposed untruncated in Buzzfeed. This book is very important because it reveals the methods and decisions the Fusion GPS team took to verify their information, to an understandably inquisitive public who's been relentlessly hounded with seeds of doubt about the quality of their documents. It also reveals the extent of integrity this entire topic required out of the Fusion GPS team and Mr. Steele. Operating only on a relatively shoestring budget, they had to face down hostile Republican subpoenas about their sources, lawsuits from Russian billionaires, podium condemnation from the sitting American president, threats to their lives, threats to the lives of their sources, spooked-out clients and consequentially desiccated rivers of revenue, pundit spins on their compromised motives, unfriendly and unfair editorials from distinguished newspapers, and weirdly enough, vexations from Mr. Bill Browder who is himself in a crusade against Russian corruption and malign influence.... The point is, these guys have definitely stepped up and reported for patriotic duty. The networks of hits they have unraveled about Trump's questionable connections are soberingly concerning.

Trump, Fox News, and practically the entire GOP have trashed Fusion and its principals--Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch--along with all the FBI agents who worked on the investigation, calling them traitors, the Deep State, Democratic dirty-tricksters, etc. (Of course, Trump, Fox News, and practically the entire GOP are only projecting.)

Most of this story isn't new, though it's helpful to get all the details repeated in a fresh narrative. But there were a few revelations to me, which is surprising, since I'm pretty steeped in all of this. There's a number of remarkable coincidences, as Simpson and Fritsch admit. For example, I didn't know before reading this that Simpson had a meeting in New York with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya the very day of her meeting with Trump Jr., Jared, and Manafort in Trump Tower--the infamous "Russian adoptions" meeting; it appears that Veselnitskaya and Fusion GPS had a mutual client. The chance of this isn't zero, since Fusion had long specialized in research relating to Russian crime figures, but it's still a stunner.

Also, I had no idea how aggressively Chuck Grassley, who was then the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, hounded Simpson and actively sought to discredit him and destroy his company and reputation. Grassley has previously seemed to me to be a reasonable, moderate kind of Republican Senator--not rabid, the way Lindsey Graham has become. But no, it appears that in the Age of Trump even previously reasonable people lose their minds. Or, to paraphrase Rick Wilson, everyone Trump bites turns rabid.

If you're as obsessed as I am with the corruption with impunity playing right before our eyes, this is worth reading.

Crime in Progress is not fiction. You know this because so far, the good guys have not won.

Crime in Progress is not fiction. You know this because so far, the good guys have not won.

Fusion GPS was founded in 2010 by Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, two former reporters at The Wall Street Journal who decided to abandon the struggling news business and use their reporting skills to conduct open-source investigations for businesses and law firms—and opposition research for political candidates. It is a small firm but apparently had a reputation for insightful and effective investigations. They knew a lot of people on both sides of the political divide and were respected by most of them.

In 2015 they were hired by a group of Republicans to examine the finances of Donald Trump. They discovered a great deal of interesting and incriminating evidence that under any other circumstances would have probably ended a candidate's political career.

A major part of the information came about because Russia and Russians kept turning up as important entities in Trump's business activity. Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele a former MI6 officer who spent a career exposing Russia's secrets. The information Steele found came to be known as the Steele dossier and was both explosive and incriminating.

Because of that both the founders of Fusion GPS and Christopher Steele tried to alert the authorities. The FBI was informed, but I believe because like almost everyone else they believed Trump would lose the election and many of them were good Republicans they withheld the information that Trump was being aided by Russia and announced yet another investigation related to Hillary's email.

The result was President Trump and severe and ongoing damage to the institutions of the Federal government in the interest of Republican partisan goals. Among the people damaged was Steele who was slandered and investigated by the administration and the Republican controlled legislatures many efforts to discredit the Steele Dossier. Fusion GPS was almost put out of business and Simpson and Fritsch were slandered.

The book is fascinating and as you might expect from journalists, a taught and engrossing read. It needs to be part of the canon on how easy it has been to undermine the government of the United States and corrupt a political party. It remains to be seen if it is also a lesson in how the good guys eventually win even if the cost to them is high!

Fascinating peek behind the headlines

Confirms my early instincts that Steele and Fusion GPS were the dedicated protectors of democratic ideals in the face of foreign and domestic efforts to undermine them - as opposed to the bizarre and fantastical antics those such as Devin Nunes propagated against them. Thank goodness there are people such as they working in the background to bolster democracy against Putin's efforts to wreck it for his own ends! But it also helps understand how close it came

Thank goodness there are people such as they working in the background to bolster democracy against Putin's efforts to wreck it for his own ends! But it also helps understand how close it came to being much worse. If the 2018 mid-term elections hadn't returned Congress to the Democrats, whatever it is that is driving the once "party of law and order" to enable an autocratic leader and destroy all the checks and balances they use and abuse when a (d)Democratic President is in power, would be even worse than what is happening now. A timely lesson that ALL citizens need to be engaged and ready to fight for free and fair elections in 2020, and elect people across the country, from the top to the bottom, in every elected office, so that there is a chance to repair and rebuild. A majority of ethical and hardworking representatives are essential to work to ensure it can never happen again that a foreign power can help install a corrupt and unfit person to the highest office in the US.

I chose this book as part of my 2020 book challenge: read a book about a current political issue. Crime is Progress is about the Steele Dossier and how it came about. The authors wanted to set the record straight on what they did and experienced in their investigation so as to dispel a lot of the conspiracy issues that surround the dossier. The book seemed to me to be even handed. It was a factual read - so at times it was dry - but the authors sought to be honest in what they thought and felt in the period covered by the book. There is not a lot of new information in the book if you followed the Russia probe but I did like a tidbit at the end when the authors note that buried deep in the Mueller report Michael Cohen received an email on 10/30/16 from a Russian business man saying the flow of tapes from Russia had been stopped (were there "pee tapes"?). Overall it was a good read. ...more

Interesting inside perspective but as the book goes on their obvious bias becomes even more evident. One must read this with the overarching reminder that they were paid millions of dollars to find dirt on trump and then push it out to the media.

Fusion is a hired gun hell bent on selling to anyone with a political agenda.

While this story clearly is intended to paint trump in a bad light it also tells a story of our political system that is very disturbing. That is the extent that supposed high minded politicians and their paid minions will expend massive resources and energy to destroy their enemies. And it's not to advance the lives of the average citizen but to further benefit the wealthy special interests.

Well-written and mind blowing story of Trump's ties to Russia and so much more. Like pulling a thread from a sweater, a simple investigation unraveled a story of a global network of disruption and treason. Must read for learning the backstory of how got to where we are today.

This is the most succinct and well-written summary of the entire Trump-Russia saga, it's key players, and the ongoing cover-up. I read a LOT of Trump-Russia books. This one does the best job, by far, of summarizing the many twists and turns.

Required reading.

Finished this on Biden's Inauguration Day. At first I was put off by the 3rd person perspective that weirdly distances the book from its authors. But the value of this book is that it lays out the timeline of investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The facts and dates are compelling, and I can only hope that Americans won't again elect a leader who is so compromised by his money troubles as to lay himself open to being bought by a foreign influencer wanting to wreck Wester Finished this on Biden's Inauguration Day. I rushed to finish this book a few days before this week's inauguration, and I'm glad I did. Having grown up in New York during the 70s, Trump's racism and sketchy business practices were already well-known to me, but"Crime in Progress" opened my eyes to his vulnerability to Russian money, and, by extension, to Russian influence. The reality of Trump's exposure should have rendered him unfit to hold any office, let alone that of U.S. President. Instead, I relived the horror Fusion GPS must have experienced when the worst possible scenario became our daily reality, and no amount of urgency - or the weight of credible evidence - could sway a gullible public or the momentum of a compromised Republican party. This book would be a cautionary tale if we had not already lived the nightmare once. I hope we don't get fooled again. ...more

This is a fun one: For the collection below, we decided to take a long-arc overview and try to identify the most popular books published over...
"The hiring of Nellie Ohr made perfect sense for Project Bangor, but it would later help fuel an elaborate right-wing conspiracy theory. In this version of events, the effort to research and understand Trump's curious interactions with the Russian underworld was actually a nefarious liberal plot—reaching from the Clinton campaign to career officials and Nellie's husband at the Justice Department—to undermine the future Trump presidency. A presidency not even Donald Trump himself thought would happen." — 0 likes
"Devin Nunes of California, who served on Trump's transition team, would soon use his chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee to try to gut the inquiries into Trump's Russia ties and to create multiple diversionary smoke screens." — 0 likes
